Intended Parent Surrogacy Journey | Heart of Surrogacy Story
Building a Family Through Surrogacy: An Intended Parent’s Journey
The surrogacy journey brings incredible excitement, yet it remains an emotional and deeply personal experience. At Heart of Surrogacy, we often hear powerful stories from intended parents and gestational carriers who unite to make the dream of parenthood a reality.
Recently, we spoke with one of our intended parents about their path and what surrogacy has meant to their family.
When you found out Autumn was going to be your gestational carrier, how did you feel?
Initially, we felt elated but hesitant. She seemed almost too good to be true—and honestly, we still feel that way. Because our first surrogate chose not to continue during the COVID-19 pandemic, we worried a similar setback might occur.
However, getting to know Autumn changed everything. We quickly realized she was meant for us. Throughout these uncertain times, she has been incredible, and we truly cannot imagine navigating this journey with anyone else.
Best Moments in Our Surrogacy Journey.
January 31, 2021, stands out as an unforgettable day. That morning, Autumn and I took our first two pregnancy tests together. Just a few days later, on February 3, 2021, my husband and I watched our baby’s heartbeat for the very first time.
The significance of that date goes even deeper; it’s the birthday of the person who saved my life after I went into cardiac arrest at age eight. Realizing our baby will arrive in late September or October is the most incredible feeling in the world.
You’ve become friends with Autumn through this process. What would you say are her best characteristics?
Autumn’s selflessness is unmatched. She often reminds us that she is simply the “oven” and that this is our baby.
By going out of her way to ensure I feel like the mom, she consistently respects every decision we make for the child. Her huge heart shines through in everything she does; she is remarkably thoughtful and respectful.
Tell us about the first doctor’s appointment you and your husband were able to attend.
The experience felt emotional and very special. Previously, we had only attended appointments via Zoom with the IVF clinic.
Once we transitioned to the OB-GYN, the doctor learned we hadn’t yet attended a visit in person. She kindly scheduled an ultrasound so we could see our baby together during that visit. We will never forget that moment.
What does Autumn’s willingness to become your gestational carrier mean to you?
Words truly cannot capture the flood of emotions and gratitude we feel.
My medical history—including a heart transplant at age eight and lifelong anti-rejection medications—makes it unsafe for me to carry a pregnancy. Attempting to do so would risk my life and expose the baby to harmful medications. Autumn’s willingness to help has allowed us to have a child safely, a gift we will cherish forever.
How has your relationship with Autumn developed through the journey?
Our bond grows every week through frequent conversations. We share updates on the baby’s growth and laugh over the weekly pregnancy emails—especially the week our baby was the size of a “Zesty Zucchini.”
Besides baby updates, we talk about everyday life, her children, their sports, and our shared excitement. Autumn is welcome in our lives for as long as she wishes. Five years ago, I wasn’t sure I wanted this type of relationship; now, I cannot imagine it any other way.
